Before I get into today’s blog post, I want to clarify I am not an expert on fasting and anyone who is attempting to do a fast should contact a medical professional. The purpose of this blog is not to promote a method of weight-loss but rather a look at a spiritual discipline.
While I am on Day 11 of eating simply on a budget, I decided to do a 3 day no food fast. What prompted it was not for what would appear on the scale or a way to cut back on spending but rather exercising a spiritual discipline that has been overlooked for sometime now in today’s culture. While, my reasons for doing it will remain personal, I do believe being more in tune with God’s word and prayer during the 3 days provided clarity. While I am not anticipating to do a no-food 3 days fast anytime soon, I am hoping to fast once a week. While, the medical professional world debates its effects, I do think it allows for someone like me who goes from 0 to 100 to take a look at what “self-control” actually means. With technology and the pace of the modern world, it is so easy to fall into instant gratification habits. Self-Discipline is a great way to help us work through growing our patience as well. Also, what was a fast for me, going with without food for days on an end is actually a way of life for so many people throughout the world. I defintely came out of it feeling more grateful for what I have and every meal that I get to enjoy.
Somethings, that has helped me staying on budget while eating healthy this week, is having some good quality rice, sweet potatoes and veggies that are in-season be the bulk of my meals. Making extra at dinner or getting up a little earlier to make lunch while I make my breakfast has allowed me to not spend money during the week eating out, while also freeing up Sunday to be completely off. I also, found playing with seasoning helps tremendously. Leave a comment below if you have ever done a fast and what your key takeaways were.
Galatians 5: 22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
